Shark Bay rewards a visit any time of year, but conditions shift a lot between our peak season and the height of summer. Here’s what to expect from your hosts at The White House Denham, so you can plan around the weather rather than be caught out by it.
Our Season: Easter to October School Holidays
Our peak season runs from the Easter school holidays through to the October school holidays — and for good reason. This stretch brings cooler temperatures and, importantly, much lower wind, which makes for calm, reliable days on the water. If a boat trip, snorkel, or fishing charter is on your list, this is the window to build your trip around. It’s also our busiest period of the year, so booking ahead — both for accommodation and for tours — makes a real difference.
Whale Season: July to October
Humpback whales move along the West Australian coast from around July through to October, right in the middle of our peak season. Pair a calm winter day on the water with whale season and you’ve got some of the best boating conditions of the whole year — worth timing your visit around if whale watching is high on your list.
Summer: Hot, Windy, and Wildlife-Rich
Summer in Shark Bay is hot and windy, which can make it a harder season to plan around — strong winds affect boat trips and outdoor tours more than the heat itself. But summer has its own drawcard: the warm weather brings the land alive with wildlife. Reptiles are out in force across the region, including the thorny devil — one of the most photographed and sought-after sightings in Shark Bay. If you’re after wildlife on land rather than in the water, summer is genuinely worth considering.
So, When Should You Book?
If calm seas, cooler days, and whale watching are what you’re after, aim for the Easter to October school holiday window — just book early, since it’s our busiest stretch. If you don’t mind the wind and heat and want a shot at spotting reptiles and the thorny devil, summer brings a different side of Shark Bay worth experiencing.
Whichever season you choose, being based on the Denham foreshore means you’re never far from a cafe, a cool drink, or your own private deck to wait out the weather.
